A new year is often a chance to kick-start your fitness goals and start on the right foot. Fitness should be accessible for all, but is often overcomplicated and can stop some people from starting at all. Here’s our top tips for getting started with fitness this January.
Find the fitness activity you enjoy!
If you find something you enjoy, it won’t feel like a chore or obligation to fulfil, it will be something you look forward to doing. If you try a fitness activity you don’t like, move on to the next activity until you find something that if effective and enjoyable!
Find a workout buddy or join a group fitness class.
Working out with someone else or in a small group will keep you accountable and help you stick to your fitness goals.
Set achievable goals
If you think on your first day in the gym, you’re going to be able to run a marathon on the treadmill, squat 100kg or master a yoga pose instantly, we hate to break it to you but you’re setting yourself up to fail. Instead, set yourself small goals and build up to them, for example, try to run 1km and the next day, increase it by 200 metres each day until you hit a target you want to achieve.
Don’t starve yourself
The amount of January get-fit guides we see across the internet with 1200 calorie meal plans are quite frankly alarming! How can you expect to fuel your body to perform if you’re starving it? A balanced and healthy diet is key to achieving a balance and healthy lifestyle. If you are unsure how much you should be eating, it is worth consulting with a nutritionist to understand the basics.
